Food Allergies and Trends

Everyone’s favorite topic, food! Food allergies have been such a large topic of conversation in the last several years. We’ve seen the focus move from gluten free to keto and now meatless is the new craze.

The geographical location of your event will determine the level of sensitivity a planner needs to carry into the menu selection process. Similarly, one’s religious affiliation will also play a large importance in menu selection. Kosher and Halal requests are more common (especially in corporate events) than one may think.

Corporate clients with returning staff/attendees should have some historical data of those requiring an altered meal based on allergies or food preference, but it’s always a good idea to double check for any new dietary restrictions. In addition, keep the F&B during breaks light, fun and quick! Items that are too carb or sugar heavy early on in the day will result in an “energy crash”. Instead offer those items as a Grab-and-Go bag at the end of the day.

Wedding clients can be a little trickier! Talk to your caterer and see what options they can provide when it comes to dietary restrictions. Some caterers can make slight adjustments onsite, such as removing the cream/sauce or cheese, but more in-depth requests will require ample notice. Giving that added attention to the menu early on, will allow your clients and the caterer the appropriate time to come up with a menu that is both creative and hits the dietary mark. If an attendee has a severe problem, consider advising the individual to eat ahead of time.

At the end of the day it is easier to modify one or two meals than change an entire menu to accommodate the few. A general rule is to have a vegetarian entree, as well as a white and a dark meat option. Most accompaniments should also be light, such as vegetables, or sides that are not rich in dairy or sauce. Although there is always that client that LOVES a good mac n cheese, and that is something to be appreciated! Regarding passed appetizers, have at least one gluten free option as well as something rich in flavor and the event will be a huge success.

Don’t be afraid of asking the dietary questions! Caterers have become used to these types of requests and have gotten pretty good at coming up with unique and tasty options that many wouldn’t normally consider. At the end of the day, planning ahead will allow for culinary creativity to flourish and the event will be that much more enjoyable for everyone involved!
